Stories & advertising

We watched a series of videos today about storytelling and its direct relationship with advertising. One of my main takeaways from these videos was the idea that the kind of story structures used in books and movies can also be used in product advertisements to be shown on TV or played on websites. The videos presented the importance of shaping stories around the product or service in mention as well, as opposed to writing a story then trying to squeeze in the product or service after the fact.

Another thing that stuck out to me was the presentation of the notion that advertisers should never aim to make someone feel something, but rather to draw emotion forth from people that was already there under the surface in the first place. They also went on to discuss the importance of our 6 primary human emotions (love, joy, surprise, anger, sadness, & fear) and that love and fear are the 2 most motivational factors to build upon or try to summon.

Keeping all of these things in mind, an advertising story can have the power to really go places.

Thanks for stopping by!
